Conducting business in a large city like San Diego can be tough. Unlike smaller cities and towns, word of mouth business is less powerful. In larger cities, standing out among your competition can be a much more difficult task, but not impossible.
As I mention on the home page of our website, I recently had to hire a professional photographer. She did an amazing job, and I could not have been happier with the service she provided.
While working together, we got to talking about business, advertising, and things like getting exposure for your business. I am writing this post because the information she shared with me was truly jaw dropping, and opened my eyes to things I have never considered.
We are both small business owners, and I asked her how she went about generating new leads and business. That conversation made me realize just how little I know about the internet, and really opened my eyes to the current state of marketing.
I have a business website, but that is pretty much as far as I had gone in regards to creating an online presence. I guess it’s not as simple as creating a site, and watching the new customers flood in!
Well, the nuances of SEO and online marketing have completely evaded me, and it truly was mind boggling to hear about the ways this gal is generating business with her website, as opposed to the no results method I had been employing!
She talked a lot about using sites like YellowPages, Yelp, Manta, and many others to help establish your brand, and build credibility to your website. She talked about blogging to establish credibility in my niche, and authority to my website. Sharing my content on social media too? Who knew, right? Was I really supposed to know this stuff? It can’t be common knowledge…
The conversation went into areas unknown to me at the time, and it really was enlightening to listen to her share this info with me. Her photography business is thriving, and she said she gets a good deal of business from the things she does online.
Out of sheer curiosity I asked her how she knew about all of this stuff, and she told me that she had taken a course about internet marketing, and has since put it all to use for her. Pretty impressive.
That day led me to believe that marketing your business on the internet is a must. Being in a city the size of San Diego, getting your website to show up at the top of the search engines can bring in a lot of new business, so that is our goal for 2017.
